Wedgewood Community Center is a new 13,000 square foot gymnasium and community building serving the Wedgewood and Pinestead neighborhoods in north Pensacola, Florida. The building is owned by Escambia County. The development phases of the project included workshops with the Neighborhood Community Associations to solicit their input on the needs and concerns of the residents. After each meeting the results of the workshops were distributed by the design team to the participants, County staff and County Commissioners. Each subsequent workshop built upon the information gathered at the previous one until a written functional program, schematic design and schematic site plan was approved by all of the stakeholders.
The building is metal frame with concrete block and brick veneer. The building also features a covered drop-off and community pavilion. Careful consideration was taken to site the building relative to the neighborhood, existing park, and existing landscape. The project received 3 Green Globes for its energy performance and sustainable features.
Completed: July 2012
